Hire a Fractional Executive
Crucial Recruiting is a fractional agency, and this is the seat-filling side of it. We place an experienced operator into a leadership or specialist seat for part of a week instead of the full-time executive you cannot yet justify, and our team scopes the seat and stays accountable for the engagement. It is built for pre-seed to Series B companies that need senior judgement in engineering, product or another function now, and will not have the volume of work or the budget to support a full-time hire for another year.

Definition
What a fractional expert actually is
What does the seat involve?
A fractional expert holds a named seat in your company at partial capacity. They sit in your leadership meetings, own decisions and outcomes in their function, manage the people in it and answer for the results. The only thing that is partial is the time.
How is that different from a consultant?
A consultant is engaged to produce an answer: a strategy, an audit, an architecture review. They leave when the document is delivered.
A fractional executive is engaged to hold the function and carry the consequences of their own decisions over months. That changes both the kind of person who takes the work and the kind of advice you get.
How is it different from an interim?
An interim is a full-time stopgap, usually covering a gap while a permanent search runs. A fractional seat is a deliberate answer to a workload that is genuinely part-time at your stage.
For a company between pre-seed and Series B, that distinction is often the difference between having a credible technical or product voice at the table and not having one at all.
Decision
When a fractional hire beats a full-time one
Work through these in order. If the first three describe you, a fractional executive is probably the right call.
- 01
The function genuinely has less than a full week of senior work in it. Be honest here. If a full-time leader would spend two days a week looking for something to own, you are not ready for one.
- 02
You need judgement more than throughput. Fractional seats work when the value is in the decisions — architecture, hiring bar, roadmap sequencing, vendor choices — rather than in hands-on volume.
- 03
The role would be hard to fill permanently at your current stage or budget. A seasoned operator will often take a fractional seat at a company they would not join full time.
- 04
You can give them real authority. A fractional leader with no decision rights is an expensive advisor, and they will leave.
- 05
You have someone in-house to carry the day-to-day between their days. Fractional works alongside a team, not instead of one.
And when it does not
A fractional executive is the wrong answer when the function needs someone present every day. Three common cases:
- A first engineering hire building the product themselves.
- A team in the middle of an incident-heavy period.
- A company where the CEO wants a co-founder-shaped partner rather than a scheduled operator.
It is also wrong if the real problem is that nobody internally has time to hire. That is a recruiting problem, and the honest answer there is embedded recruiting or contingent hiring at 15 percent of first-year salary rather than a fractional seat.

Roles
The fractional talent we place
We keep this list short on purpose. These are the seats where we have a network deep enough to introduce people we would stand behind. If you need a seat that is not listed, say so on the call and we will tell you plainly whether we can cover it.
Fractional CTO
Technical direction, architecture decisions, engineering hiring bar, vendor and build-versus-buy calls, and management of a small engineering team.
Fractional CPO
Product strategy and sequencing, discovery discipline, the link between what customers say and what gets built, and coaching of a first product hire.
Other senior functional leadership
Selected commercial, finance and people leadership seats where the workload is part-time at your stage. Scoped case by case rather than offered as a menu.
Process
How the engagement works
Scope the seat
We work out what the function actually needs each week, what decisions the person will own and who they will work with. If the honest answer is that you need a full-time hire, we say so and point you at the right service.
Introduce a short list
Two or three people, each with a written note on what they have run before, how they work and where they are less strong. Not a database dump.
Trial the working pattern
An agreed initial period at the agreed cadence, with a written review at the end of it. Both sides can walk away at that point without a drawn-out exit.
Review and adjust
Cadence is revisited as the company changes. Some seats grow towards full time, some shrink, some end because the problem is solved. All three are acceptable outcomes.
Commercial terms are agreed on the call. The model depends on the seat and the time commitment, so we would rather quote you accurately than publish a rate that is wrong for most companies.

How this differs from our recruiting services
Fractional experts
We place an operator into your business to run a function part-time. The output is the work itself.
Embedded recruiting
A recruiter works inside your team on a flat monthly fee, set by scope, to fill several permanent roles. The output is your own hires.
Contingent hiring
One permanent role, run on contingency at 15 percent of first-year salary, paid when the person starts. The output is one hire and a 90-day replacement guarantee.
Companies often use two at once: a fractional CTO holding the engineering function while our embedded recruiter builds the team underneath them.
Fractional expert FAQs
- What is a fractional executive?
- A fractional executive is an experienced leader who works inside your company for part of a week on an ongoing basis, holding real accountability for a function rather than advising from the outside. It is a permanent-shaped seat filled at partial capacity, not a project engagement.
- How is this different from Crucial's recruiting services?
- Here we place a fractional expert into your business to do the work: a fractional CTO runs your engineering function. Our embedded recruiting service puts a recruiter inside your company to hire your own permanent staff. This page is about the operator in the seat, not the recruiting that fills your permanent roles.
- Can I hire a fractional CTO and convert them to full time later?
- Sometimes. Some fractional leaders want a full-time seat once the company can justify it; many do not, by choice. We agree up front which situation you are in so nobody is surprised twelve months later.
- How many days a week does a fractional expert work?
- It depends on the seat and the stage of the company. One to three days a week is the usual range for a leadership seat, agreed before the engagement starts and reviewed as the workload changes.
- What does a fractional expert cost?
- The commercial model depends on the seat, the seniority and the time commitment, so we quote it on a call rather than publish a rate that would be wrong for most companies. Book a call and we will give you a straight number for your situation.
- What happens if the fractional hire is not working out?
- Fractional engagements are reviewed on a fixed cadence and can be ended with short notice written into the agreement. That is part of the point of the model: you are not carrying a full-time executive contract while you find out.
