Software-native candidates frequently struggle with that, and it is a better thing to screen for than to discover in month four.
On compensation you are competing with oil and gas, utilities and industrials, who pay well and offer stability. It is slower per candidate than normal sourcing and it produces a far more accurate list, which is the trade worth making on research roles.
- Can climatetech startups compete with oil and gas on salary?
- Usually not on cash, and it is a mistake to try. What does win is scope and mission together: the chance to own a whole system rather than a component, at a company whose purpose the candidate believes in. Candidates leaving industrials are typically doing so deliberately, so the pitch is about what they cannot get where they are.
- Should we hire hardware or software people first?
- It depends on where the risk sits, and the honest answer is usually hardware first, because hardware timelines are less forgiving. Software hires can be added and ramped quickly; a wrong hardware decision made without the right engineer in the room can cost a quarter or more to unwind.
- How long do climatetech searches take?
- Research and specialist engineering roles typically run eight to twelve weeks, longer than a comparable software search, because the pool is small and the candidates are usually not looking. Commercial roles run closer to normal timelines. The planning mistake we see most often is assuming a scientist search will move at software speed.
